In 1895 and 1908 the NGC was extended by the two index catalogs IC I and IC II. The NGC contains 7840 entries, among them most of the Messier catalog. In contrast to the Messier catalog the objects of the NGC catalog are ordered by right ascension. It contains objects of the northern and southern sky.
